Jeffery Gates

Jeffery Gates is the Senior Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing at Stetson University. He is not only an accomplished administrator but also a proud alumnus and a trailblazer for first-generation college students. His journey, marked by academic excellence and a deep commitment to student success, exemplifies the transformative power of higher education.

Gates's educational background is a testament to his dedication and intellectual curiosity. He earned a BS in Business Administration from Bryant University, an MA in Student Services from Binghamton University, and an LPD in Law and Policy from Northeastern University. This diverse academic foundation has equipped him with the knowledge and skills to excel in his leadership role at Stetson.

Gates's experience as a first-generation college student has profoundly shaped his understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities faced by this population. He candidly recalls feeling lost and overwhelmed during his early college years, navigating unfamiliar terrain without a clear roadmap. However, his outgoing nature and determination led him to forge connections and find his footing.

Reflecting on his journey, Gates recognizes that many first-generation students may not possess the same level of self-assurance or readily seek out support. This realization fuels his passion for creating an inclusive and empowering environment where all students, regardless of their background, feel valued and supported.

Gates is eager to share his insights and advice with aspiring first-generation students. He emphasizes two key points:

  • It's okay to ask questions: Gates encourages students to embrace their curiosity and seek guidance whenever needed. He assures them that faculty and staff are eager to help and that asking questions is a sign of intellectual engagement, not weakness.
  • You are not alone: Gates reminds first-generation students that they are part of a vibrant and supportive community. Many of their peers, faculty, and staff members have walked a similar path and understand the unique challenges they face.

When asked to distill his wisdom into a single piece of advice, Gates offers a powerful message: "Connect." He urges students to actively seek out meaningful connections with peers, mentors, and campus resources. He encourages them to trust their instincts and find spaces where they feel a sense of belonging and support.

Gates recognizes that academic success is intertwined with personal well-being. He advises students to prioritize their mental and emotional health, seeking help if they encounter obstacles or feel overwhelmed.

Jeffery Gates's story is a beacon of hope for first-generation college students. His accomplishments demonstrate that with perseverance, resilience, and a willingness to connect, they can achieve their dreams and make a lasting impact on the world. His dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment at Stetson University reflects his deep commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders, regardless of their background.
